Web Design Terminology

Domain - A domain is one portion of an IP address and is part of the unique identification process for web site on the WWW. The www.datec.net.pg is one example of a domain.

Domain Name - As with the datec ISP (www.datec.net.pg) domain, it is a name that has been purchased and registered with Unitech, the Internet name-issuing authority in PNG. Domain names are for those who desire a distinct identity on the WWW. Although a domain name may be kept indefinitely by the same company, it involves maintenance fees paid to an ISP (for example datec ISP) on a bi-annual, or annual basis.
Domain names are actually a user-friendly way of calling an IP (Internet Protocol) address. Internet Protocols are actually a series of numbers separated by periods. Each section identifies the name, location, and type of organization.

What's in a name... choosing the right name is essential. Besides representing your organization, it plays a key role in how search engines perceive and display search results concerning your site. Best advice: only purchase a domain name after consulting a professional or after careful research on your own.

FTP (File Transfer Protocol). Loosely translated it means: create a web page at home, or office and send it to datec server in POM over the Internet and in one piece. It's a standard for transferring data, in the form of files, over the Internet from one computer to another.

Web Hosting - A company that provides space on their server for the publishing of web sites to the Internet. Most will host your registered domain, or will create a site within their domain using your name (similar to this site's URL). Quite often, web hosting and choosing a domain name go hand-in-hand. As stated earlier, choosing a domain name requires careful consideration.
