  Modem Disconnection from the Internet
  Datec (PNG) Ltd

  Problem
Calling any Datec internet number but the line is dropped
Calls get dropped after a few minutes of connection
Calls get dropped during login
Modems cannot connect at all because line condition is so bad
  Reason
Modem S10 register is set too low. Modem hangs up after carrier loss.
  Procedures
Some modems are shipped to wait only 1.4seconds before dropping a call after a carrier loss.

Check that the S10 modem register is set to 6 seconds , this will allow the call to remain connected after carrier loss.

1. Reset the modem, or PC if it is an internal modem.
2. If you're using Win 95 use the 'Hyper Terminal' to talk to the modem.
3. Take Note of the Modem COM Port that your modem is currently connected to.  Check this using Diagnostics Tab in the Modem Properties
4. To use the Hyper Terminal, click on Start , Programs, Accessories, Hyper Terminal - Icon Hyper Terminal .
5. At the prompt for the new connection type in MODEM then click Ok.
6. In the Connect To box go to the box that has connect Using and select the Com port that your modem is configured on. Eg Com2 Don't use the modem description otherwise you have to type a telephone number.
7. In the Port Settings window, click on Restore Defaults then click OK.
8.

You should be looking at a blank Hyper Terminal Screen, you are ready to talk to the modem directly.

9. To test if you are talking to the modem properly type in the letters at then press enter, you should see a response on the next line down saying OK.
10. Now we need to examine the S10 register. To do this type in at  s10?  and press enter.
11. A number will appear on the next line down, make a note of this number somewhere. It is the tenths of a second that the modem will wait before hanging up after carrier loss.
12. This number should be set to 60. To do this type at  s10=60 and press enter.
13. Now we need to store this number in the modems profile so type in at  &w and press enter.
14. Exit Hyper Terminal and try connecting to the Internet again.
