If you are outside of the Datec-NGN Fixed Wireless, Microwave or EVDO-CDMA coverage areas then a very-small-aperture terminal “VSAT” satelight services is for you.

VSAT services typically trade session throughput and latency for wide area coverage.  Principally this means that, fantastically, VSAT is available everywhere but that the avaiable service is slower due to increased packet round trip times.  It takes a lot longer for a packet of data to travel up to a satelight and back down again to earth than it does to traverse a terrestrial microwave radio link or a laser light link but for non time sensitive applicaitons such as email, basic web and media streaming the reduced speed (latency) is irrelevant.  Consequently Datec recommends VSAT services where no other option exists and where the high latencies are acceptible to the application layer.

For further study on the performance differences with VSAT vs terrestrial fiber and microwave please discuss with Datec staff or investigate Bandwidth Delay Product (BDP), TCP Windows Size & Latency effects on throughput and “Long Fat Networks” vs “Short Fat Networks”.  All of which are beyond the scope of this web site.
